The Waggy Dog Bakehouse Organic Dog Treats Cookbook is the result of 4 years of testing, baking and talking to customers about their dogs all over Australia.
Most commercial dog food found in supermarkets is wheat based, contains indigestible fillers and starch and other common allergens such as corn or soy. Add chemical preservatives, flavour enhancers and artificial colours to the mix, and it is easy to see why it is making some dogs sick.
Dog food allergies account for up to 5% of all canine dermatoses.
Signs are predominantly associated with skin (including ear infections) and/or the gastrointestinal tract. In order of the most common offenders in dogs are beef, dairy products, fish, corn, wheat and soy.
Gluten intolerance is affecting many breeds of our dogs and cats. Our pets have only been eating wheat-based pet foods for about 20 years so it is not surprising that many of our pets have an intolerance to it. Wheat gluten can and does cause conditions such as kidney failure.
